Architecture Summer School

This programme is designed for bright, curious students with a passion for architecture and an enthusiasm for spending two weeks working on the subject while immersed in one of the world’s most architecturally unique cities, whether they choose Oxford or Cambridge. Students don’t need to be sure they want to be an architect in the future, they just need a passion for the subject.

No previous subject knowledge is needed. By providing skills workshops and in-depth learning, the course is designed to introduce students to a subject not normally taught in schools. All students need is an interest in any aspect of Architecture and creative ideas for how to tackle architectural challenges.

The course pushes students academically. It introduces lots of new architectural vocabulary and skills as well as a comprehensive history of the subject. It is designed to stretch and challenge ambitious students by introducing them to university-level concepts and teaching styles. Their learning is guided by expert members of our faculty and takes place in small classes, ensuring that every student feels supported and enjoys their learning while encountering new ideas.

As a course which stretches students to undergraduate-level learning and introduces university-style teaching, the Architecture Summer School puts students in a great position to apply for university. Your work on the Compiling a Portfolio module will equip you with the tools needed to create a stand-out application, and the ongoing work and final product of your Design Project will form ideal material for your portfolio.

The course is very hands-on. Students are tasked with a design challenge which they spend the full course working on which involves practical and digital modelling, sketching, collage, and technical drawings. They also get involved in debates and other challenges. This hands-on approach helps them gain confidence and build the foundations for a portfolio of work.

A typical morning involves a lecture and two seminars or workshops. In the afternoon students have another extended workshop or practical session. The rest of the day is spent socialising with friends during activities, enjoying delicious meals in inspiring campus settings and exploring the city.

The programme takes place in one of two inspiring campuses in the historic colleges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Whichever location they choose, students have access to university-level facilities and teaching spaces.

By teaching in small groups, we ensure that each student has a personalised relationship with their tutor. This means they receive high-quality constructive feedback and any support they need in class. It also means that students bond with their classmates, creating a friendly atmosphere in which students get involved and ask questions with confidence.

Our students come from all over the world. Since our first summer school in 2004, we have welcomed students from over 175 countries. They speak a wide range of languages and come from a wide range of backgrounds, creating a vibrant community perfect for international students.

At the end of the course, students receive a graduation pack which contains a certificate acknowledging their academic achievements during the course. They also receive a personalised report and detailed grades.
