Academy Royale International (ARI), formerly Oxford Royale Academy, has brought ambitious teenagers to the world's great seats of learning for more than two decades. Our global community spans more than 50,000 alumni from 175+ nations, and our programmes have been recognised with numerous awards, including the King's Award for Enterprise.
Founding Story
From one Oxford college to an international organisation
We began with two questions. What happens when a summer school is opened to the world? And what happens when young people are given serious academic freedom before they must make consequential decisions about their future?
In 2004, the summer education market was dominated by broad, generic programmes, many organised around groups arriving from a single country. We wanted to create an international learning community in the fullest sense: a place where students from different cultures and educational systems would study together, exchange ideas and discover how differently an apparently familiar question can be understood.
The second question was more personal. Where do a young person's aptitudes lie? Which subjects sustain their curiosity when the limits of the school syllabus are removed? What forms of study and work might give them a durable sense of purpose? And which academic and professional paths are most likely to suit them?
In response to those questions, William Humphreys established our first summer programme, hiring residential and teaching facilities at Exeter College, University of Oxford, as its inaugural venue during college vacation. It was conceived as a structured process of intellectual and personal discovery: a setting in which students could deepen an existing interest or encounter university disciplines and professional fields before choosing where to specialise.
Teaching was university-style from the outset: rigorous, discussion-led and intellectually ambitious. Academics and specialist practitioners had the freedom to move beyond the constraints of the term-time syllabus, while students experienced the habits of inquiry, debate and independent thought associated with university study.
The inaugural programme exceeded its intended enrolment. Students recommended it to friends and families, and the organisation grew through those recommendations. The founding premise has remained consistent: meaningful exposure to demanding ideas, unfamiliar perspectives and possible futures can help young people understand their interests and abilities more clearly, and make better-informed choices about the paths they pursue.
You cannot live and learn in Oxford and remain unmoved. Within these walls, eight centuries of scholarship stand at your shoulder, and the conversations run long past midnight. Students arrive curious. They leave changed, with a new sense of what their lives might become.
Our Growth
From Oxford to an International Community
What began at one Oxford college developed into a wider international programme. The model expanded across Oxford, then to Cambridge and Imperial College London, and later to Yale, Stanford, the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia in the United States, with junior programmes hosted at leading British boarding schools.
More than 50,000 students from 175+ nations have since taken part. The scale matters because it extends the original educational hypothesis: a subject is understood differently when students bring different assumptions, experiences and intellectual traditions to the same room.

The Student Experience
An Education Designed for Discovery
The experience is designed to give students a credible encounter with university-level study and with the independence that accompanies it. Six elements work together.

Intellectual immersion
From archaeology to zoology, filmmaking to fashion, students study subjects in greater depth than the school curriculum typically permits. Courses are built around active inquiry, close discussion and work that asks students to test ideas rather than simply absorb information.

University environments
Students live and learn in collegiate settings associated with some of the world's most influential universities. The setting gives academic ambition a physical reality and allows students to imagine themselves participating in university life.

Ideas beyond the curriculum
Guest speakers have included Professor Richard Dawkins, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Andrew Motion, Baroness Chakrabarti, Lord Hague of Richmond and Matthew Syed. Their lectures and conversations expose students to intellectual lives shaped by research, public service, exploration, writing and performance.

A wider field of experience
Academic work is balanced by cultural visits, sport, social events and shared experiences beyond the classroom. These activities create space for friendships, confidence and informal learning to develop alongside formal study.

A genuinely international cohort
Students learn with peers from across the world, not alongside a visiting group from only one country. The resulting exchange of assumptions and perspectives is part of the education, not an incidental feature of it.

Supported independence
Dedicated campus teams are available around the clock. Within a carefully supervised residential environment, students can exercise greater independence, manage their time and build the practical confidence that prepares them for university life.
Access and Responsibility
Extending Opportunity
Academic potential is widely distributed; access to exceptional educational experiences is not. Our responsibility is to widen participation where we can and to use our teaching resources beyond the students able to attend a residential programme.
Scholarships and bursaries help students join programmes that might otherwise be beyond their reach. Our work with JA Worldwide extends opportunities through an international network committed to preparing young people for employment and entrepreneurship. We have also supported students affected by the war in Ukraine, alongside charitable and community initiatives responding to particular needs.
Access also extends beyond a place on campus. Free educational resources make academic guidance and subject exploration available to a much wider audience, allowing students and families to benefit from the expertise developed through our programmes wherever they are in the world.
A Broader Sense of Responsibility
International education carries environmental and social responsibilities. We have worked to reduce paper use and operational waste, while continuing to examine how programmes can deliver a rich educational experience with a more considered use of resources.
Recognition
Recognition Over Time
Independent recognition provides one measure of the organisation's development. Academy Royale International received the King's Award for Enterprise for International Trade in 2024, following Queen's Awards for Enterprise in 2012, 2016 and 2019. Four Enterprise awards over twelve years reflect sustained international growth rather than a single period of success.
The organisation was also named among the Financial Times and Statista Europe's Long-Term Growth Champions 2026, and its programmes have received the Best Educational Product award five times.
These distinctions recognise commercial development and product quality. Their deeper value is the continuity they reveal: an educational idea first tested in Oxford has proved relevant to families and students across many countries, cultures and school systems.

Academic Innovation
Learning for a Changing World
The disciplines students will study and the professions they will enter are changing rapidly. Our programmes therefore need to connect enduring academic habits with emerging fields of knowledge and practice.
Our flagship relationship with MIT RAISE brings students closer to current thinking in artificial intelligence education. It creates opportunities to encounter AI as a field of serious inquiry: to understand how intelligent systems are developed, examine where they can be useful, and consider the ethical questions that accompany their use.
This work sits within a broader educational commitment. Students should leave with more than technical familiarity. They should be better able to ask precise questions, evaluate evidence, recognise uncertainty and understand the human consequences of technological choices.

The new chapter starts - Academy Royale International
In September 2026, after twenty-two years as Oxford Royale Academy (ORA), we adopted the name Academy Royale International. The change recognises what the organisation has become and gives its founding idea room to travel further.
Oxford remains at the heart of our academic programmes, alongside Cambridge and Marlborough College and an expanding portfolio of programmes and partnerships in the United Kingdom and internationally. The new name reflects both continuity and reach: the academic seriousness established in Oxford, and a community whose character has always been international.
As Academy Royale International, the next chapter is about extending the proposition with which we began: bringing ambitious young people from different countries together, giving them serious exposure to subjects and possible futures, and helping them discover what they are capable of achieving.
